If Musicians Were Top iPhone Apps

In celebrating its billionth download, iTunes recently announced its top 25 downloaded apps of all time. Many of them have been thoroughly used by musicians and artists in reaching out directly to fans. But sometimes the rock star is so like the app in personality that we found it fitting to wonder: What if musicians were the top iPhone apps? We paired 10 movers and shakers with their most astonishingly similar digital counterparts.

10. Google Search/Little Steven van Zandt: With an encyclopediac knowledge of rock’s hidden gems, this E Street mainstay and “Underground Garage” radio host can immediately recommend stuff you never knew you were even looking for.

9. Temple Run/Ben Gibbard: Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Serviceman Gibbard shed some major pounds and picked up the healthy lifestyle in recent years, entering marathons and getting featured in Runner’s World. He’s the human embodiment of the popular video game.

8. Twitter/Kanye West: The world of 140 characters is his dominion. No one can make the social media world go crazier than Yeezus.

7. The Weather Channel/Carrie Underwood: The Oklahoma native has likely seen her share of torrential climes, if solemn recent events in OK can attest. And her now-famous LED dress she wore at the Grammys was a storm pattern in itself.

6. Words With Friends/Greg Graffin: Bad Religion’s Ph.D.-toting front man is a gentleman and a scholar of the punk realm. His band’s clever way with words rivals that of the Scrabble scion.

5. Skype/Matt Bellamy: With Muse constantly touring the world, the singer/guitarist might spend a lot of time away from fiancee Kate Hudson and their son, Bingham. We imagine this royal rock family stays close with the audio and visual godsend.

4. YouTube/Jared Leto: Flashy, brings people together and continues to celebrate the art of the music video– that’s 30 Seconds to Mars front man Leto to a tee. Minus the tee-shirt. 4. 3. Instagram/Zooey Deschanel: The She of She & Him rules this hipster photo haven with her throwback style. Of course, she’d look amazing even with #nofilter.

2. Pandora Radio/Madonna: Neil Diamond into MGMT into Beyonce, and no one blinks? Madonna’s been genre-hopping her whole career, and she has always made it look effortless. She was the one-woman playlist before singles got popular again.

1. Facebook/Andre 3000: The most-wanted entity in music right now is the living Facebook. He’s got a ton of diverse friends, as proven by his appearing on cuts by Capital Cities, Gorillaz, Frank Ocean… Even if you don’t dig his art (or think you’re too cool for Facebook), you still have to admit his/its hold on mainstream culture.

Bonus: Angry Birds/Cee Lo: Obviously.
